Our Wichita Optometrist Discusses Different Types of Eye Diseases

Diabetes- can cause a condition known as diabetic retinopathy, which damages the retina over time. Those with diabetes should have their eyes examined by our optometrist each year to check for early signs of diabetic retinopathy. Detecting this condition early and starting treatment can help lower the risk of vision loss. Treatment options for this condition include injectable medications and laser surgery.

Glaucoma- is a disease that damages the optic nerve, which eventually leads to vision loss. It is one of the most common causes of vision loss in the U.S. While there is no way to prevent this disease, having it found and treated early can significantly lower the risk of vision loss. Managing this disease involves decreasing the amount of pressure in the eye with eye drops, laser treatment or surgical procedures.

Macular Degeneration- is an age-related condition that is the most common cause of vision loss in older adults. This disease causes changes in the eye that lead to an inability to see clearly. Over time, this disease can cause vision loss. Although one form of this disease, known as the dry form, does not respond to treatment, the use of low vision devices can help patients see well. The wet form can be treated with laser surgery if it is caught early.

Dry Eye - is associated with poor tear quality or a low amount of tear production. Age, medications, underlying medical conditions and gender can increase the risk of this condition. Managing this type of eye condition involves increasing comfort by stimulating tear production. This can be done by blocking tear ducts, using nonprescription tear solutions or taking prescription eye drops.

Seasonal Eye Allergies- can cause eye problems, such as itchy eyes or watery eyes. Patients with these allergies can manage them in order to reduce eye irritation. Treatments for eye symptoms caused by seasonal allergies include using over-the-counter or prescription eye drops to relieve irritation.

Chronic Red Eyes- can be caused by underlying conditions, such as uveitis, or lifestyle habits, such as wearing contact lenses too long. They can also be caused by allergies. Managing this condition depends on what is causing it to occur. Those who have red eyes on a regular basis should have their eyes examined and diagnosed to determine the best course of eye disease management.
